Air Flow Meter, 75-83 280Z-280ZX Non-Turbo

This item fits your selected vehicle in its original configuration. If your Z has been customized, please let us know in the notes when you check out. Thanks!
Image Note:
The image shows AFM #A31-060-001 which uses 3 mounting bolts. The AFM for your exact car may appear slightly different depending on year and model number. See Harness Connector Pins image below for examples of 4 mounting bolt meter configuration.

Note:
Air Flow Meter model number must be supplied to order (typically located on either the plastic cover or the curved portion of the housing). You MUST perform the REQUIRED Factory Service Manual testing procedures prior to ordering. See our Note on Air Flow Meters below for more details.

Includes:
  • (1) Rebuilt Air Flow Meter (Select Model Number)

Description:
The Air Flow Meter in your Z/ZX is the device that measures air velocity into the throttle body. As more air flows through the housing, it pushes the internal flap which rotates the potentiometer (under the black cap). It then sends a variable signal to the Fuel Computer/ECU based on the potentiometer position, which combines that input along with other signals to determine the proper fuel amount for the measure volume of air. Over time, the potentiometer can either wear out or build up deposits from use, or the internal spring can lose tension from age. If moisture gets past the seal, the electronics can build up corrosion as well (the same is true for the electrical plug). All of these issues can affect the voltage signal sent to the computer, which would then add the incorrect amount of fuel and causing either a rich or lean condition.

In addition to working with expert rebuilders who have worked with these meters for decades, all MSA Air Flow Meters are rebuilt on genuine Nissan cores. This ensures that the meter you receive is working properly and ready to install right out of the box. (Important: See our Note on Air Flow Meters below prior to ordering!) Don't forget to inspect the electrical plug and the two rubber boots for damage and wear!

Core Notes:
Your old part (core) must be complete as pictured above, including the plastic cover (does not need to be attached, only included) and the 4 bolt inlet (attached), and in rebuildable condition (please give us a call at (714)639-2620 or Email us for options if your core does not have a cap). Only genuine Nissan Z-Car cores are acceptable for credit (previously rebuilt is fine as long as it is still a Nissan core). Your core must have the same model number as the unit you order for credit. The mounting bracket is not included in the rebuild, so you do not need to send it in (it will not be cleaned if you do, so we recommend not sending it).

Important Note:
Be sure to follow the Factory Service Manual testing procedures fully and carefully to confirm that your metering device is actually the cause of the problem you are having. Please see our Note on Air Flow Meters below for more information regarding these units. As with all electrical and smog parts, these metering devices ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RETURN, even if it turns out that they were not the cause of the problem with your Z or ZX. Please give us a call at (714)639-2620 or Email us prior to ordering if you have any questions.

A Note on Air Flow Meters:
Over the years, a common trend that we have seen is defaulting to the Air Flow Meter as the source for why a fuel injected Z is not running properly. In many cases, someone will replace an old AFM with a new or rebuilt unit, only to have the car run even worse than it did with the old unit (or not at all). This situation comes up most often when the car is running rich (too much fuel). Typically, when this happens it is the result of another component functioning improperly, such as the (Water Temperature Sensor). AFM adjustments are often used to "band-aid" other issues in the fuel injection system, and in many cases we find that the meters are adjusted to the full extent possible. Once no further adjustments can be made, it is usually determined that the AFM has gone bad and needs to be replaced. When the replacement is installed (which is set back to factory specs), the fuel computer will try to push far too much fuel through the injectors and the car will either not run at all or will barely run extremely rich (exhaust backfires, black smoke, etc.). Before ordering a replacement Air Flow Meter, it is highly recommended that you fully inspect other components in the fuel system (in addition to the REQUIRED Factory Service Manual testing procedures) in order to rule out other probable causes. Items to inspect include the water temperature sensor (75-79)/head temperature sensor (80-83), fuel injectors, all of the electrical connectors throughout the system (injectors, temp sensors, air regulator, etc.), fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs (for plug condition), and more (give us a call at (714)639-2620 for other possible causes).
