Description:
Now you can replace your old, worn out deck lid panel with our new high-quality reproduction panel. We use the same premium black vinyl used in many of our other interior vinyl pieces and appropriate fiberboard backing. The deck lid panel attaches to the bottom of the tailgate. Early 71 240Z's came with a plastic deck lid panel that had two vents incorporated into the design (see 40-4801 in Related Items for the early panel). This panel is for late 71 through 78 Z Coupes, which had the rear vents in a different location on the car.
Installation Notes:
We recommend using original style hardware (inspect your deck lid; see Hardware Note below) when installing these panels for best results and ease of access down the road rather than using any kind of adhesive. While the holes in the rear backing of this panel should match almost all factory deck lids within a normal tolerance, we have found some cases where the hole pattern in the hatch is off slightly due to welding irregularities. Test fit the panel first to make sure the holes line up close enough for the the hardware. Then, using an Awl, punch a small hole in the outer material from the top (vinyl) side (be sure not to rip sideways, and to punch from the top material towards the backing) to match the pre-cut hole in the backing. In rare cases, if your Z deck lid is one of the oddballs that are slightly off from this pattern, you may have to elongate a hole or two slightly in the backing to accommodate. Since the outer surface won't be pierced until you have checked, it should always end up looking like the first one. Let us know if you have any questions.
Hardware Note:
We have seen inconsistent quantities over the years when it comes to the hardware used to hold the Interior Deck Lid Panels in place. Nissan specifies 10 of the plastic Interior Rivets (40-3965) for early style panels (70-71 plastic panels) and 10 metal screws and washers for late style panels (71.5-78 vinyl panels). The most common hardware configuration that we have seen uses a combination of both hardware types, with the screw/washer combination in the corners and plastic rivets for the remaining 6 mounting holes. We recommend inspecting and matching the hardware configuration in your specific car.
