Factory Speedometer Pinion Sleeve, 70-89 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX
Includes:
Important: There are 2 distinct housing types for Nissan transmissions which are not directly interchangeable. See our Fitment Notes below for more details.
Description:
The speedometer pinion sleeve serves as the connecting point between the speedometer and the transmission. It fits into the transmission to mount the speedo pinion gear and is threaded on the outer end for the speedometer cable connection. This is the genuine, original equipment (OEM) housing, which includes the speedometer sleeve along with both the large and small o-rings. See Related Items for the locking plate and bolt, retaining pin, and pinion gear options.
Nissan discontinued the original speedometer pinion housings many years ago, but did not supercede them to a replacement. We are working on alternative options at this time. Note that this housing is included with the 20, 21, 22, and 23 tooth speedometer pinion assemblies (see Related Items for available options).
Fitment Notes:
Speedometer Pinion Sleeves used in Z-Cars are designed to position the pinion gear at an offset within the mounting bore. This design allows a variety of pinion gear sizes to be used without the need for a different drive gear or tailshaft. Smaller gear sizes need to be positioned closer to the drive gear, while larger sizes require a further position to properly interface with the drive gear in the transmission. Pinion sleeves with different offsets were used to accomplish this. Later transmission setups ended up inverting the mounting position while keeping the gear position the same, which further complicates things. Properly identifying which housing is correct for your application can be rather tricky, especially if you have swapped out your transmission assembly or differential gears (or both), or you are running tires that are a different diameter than original. The guide below will cover MOST applications; however, we strongly recommend inspecting your existing assembly prior to ordering.
This pinion sleeve should generally be correct in the following cases:
Factory Application:
This pinion sleeve replaces the original version equipped in these transmissions when used with the original pinion gear (reference only; refer to Fitment Notes above):

This pinion sleeve should generally be correct in the following cases:
- The retaining bolt hole on your transmission is located ABOVE the pinion sleeve bore hole, AND, you are installing a 16 (yellow), 17 (black), 18 (blue), or 19 (white) tooth pinion gear. (Mostly 70-78.)
- The retaining bolt hole on your transmission is located BELOW the pinion sleeve bore hole, AND, you are installing a 20 (red), 21 (purple), 22 (orange), or 23 (green) tooth pinion gear. (Mostly 79-83.)
- The housing you are replacing has the notch for the locking plate on the SAME side as the retaining pin hole for the pinion gear, AND, you are reinstalling the same gear from your existing assembly (or replacing with the same size).
- If none of these apply to your specific application, you may need the other pinion sleeve or may have a custom application. See 21-7188 in Related Items or give us a call at (714)639-2620 or Email us.
