Description:
The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS, also called Crank Angle Sensor (CAS)) is located on the front of the driver's (left) side cylinder head at the front of the exhaust camshaft. The sensor monitors both engine speed and piston position and sends that information to the ECU. The ECU then uses this info to determine when to open the fuel injectors and fire the spark plugs (fuel injection control and ignition timing). (The CMPS effectively serves as the distributor for these models.) The CMPS will usually have an intermittent failure, which tends to show up sometime after the car reaches operating temperature. The engine will simply cut out when the sensor stops sending a signal to the ECU and then will not restart until the engine (and sensor) has cooled down. Once cooled, the car will start and run normally for a while, but will likely have the same issue again. The intermittent nature of the situation is generally difficult to diagnose for most non-Z mechanics, as once the engine starts normally again any diagnostic codes go away with no record (at least until the sensor overheats again and causes the engine to cut out again). Eventually, this leads to a complete failure of the sensor and the car will not start at all (although once the complete failure occurs it can easily be diagnosed).

This is the genuine, original equipment (OEM) early style sensor, which was manufactured by Mitsubishi for Nissan and used on all 90-8/93 models.
