Description:
The carbon canister on your car is designed to draw fuel vapors from your gas tank and prevent the tank from over-pressurizing. The filter inside the canister goes bad over time; however, the filter tends to deteriorate quite rapidly if liquid fuel reaches it (from over-filling at the pump, for instance). We recommend inspecting/changing out this filter with every tune-up or if you are having trouble passing an emissions test (carbon canister issues tend to show up as a high hydrocarbon count). The carbon canister filter is one of the easiest to replace emissions components; simply slip out the old filter from the bottom of the canister and tuck the this genuine, original equipment (OEM) replacement back in its place (no need to fully remove the canister from the bracket).
Note:
We do not recommend removing the carbon canister for any reason other than replacement or cleaning/restoration. Unlike some emissions components, removing the carbon canister does not lead to any sort of performance gains. Removing the canister can lead to over-pressurizing the fuel tank, which is a very dangerous situation when it occurs.
