Description:
The fan clutch is more than the part that mounts the cooling fan to the engine. It is a thermostatic control device that regulates whether the fan is fully engaged or not. Under normal operation, it allows the fan to rotate somewhat independently from the engine. The fan may actually rotate faster than the engine RPM (such as during highway driving) when not engaged. When the engine temperature is high enough, the fan clutch engages and the fan rotates at the same RPM as the engine (primarily at low driving speeds). The fan clutch is one of the most common causes of engine overheating, especially at faster driving speeds.

Clutch Inspection:
One simple way to tell if your fan clutch is bad is to try and rotate it while the engine is off. The clutch is likely bad if you are both unable to rotate it at all and if it rotates with little to no resistance. A good fan clutch will allow for some movement with decent resistance. We recommend consulting with a local mechanic to confirm that it is bad if you are unsure.
