Description:
One of the most common complaints about early Z-Cars is the sound system. Z owners have been trying to find the best way to improve the sound in their Z's for a long time, usually by hacking into the factory door panels or kick panels. We have offered Rear Speaker Panels (temporarily unavailable) for many years, which add two forward-facing 6x9" speakers for a big improvement, but many want the fuller sound that comes by adding front speakers. These panels are the perfect solution! These custom Speaker Panels are thermo formed from rigid 1/8" ABS, have a "textured" satin black finish, and pre-cut holes for 5 1/4" speakers. They fit in place of your original kick panels, and require no modifications to the car (therefore if you wanted at a later date to re-install the original kick panels, they would bolt right back in). The driver's (left) side panel is held in place using original hardware, while the passenger (right) side uses pre-installed industrial grade Velcro and one trim screw. Both panels are designed to allow the speaker wiring to be run without interfering with the panel and are low profile. This kit includes both driver and passenger side Front Speaker Panels.
Speakers:
These panels will require "low profile" speakers (not included). A great option is our Retrosound speakers, which fit easily into the space behind the panel (see 50-1292 in Related Items below for the speakers, or 50-1294 for a complete and DISCOUNTED kit!). Note that holes for the speaker mounting are not pre-drilled, allowing you flexibility in your choice of low profile speakers, and exactly how you want to position them. If you want to try to use speakers you already have, or you would prefer to source a set on your own, you will need to look for units that measure 2 1/4" from mounting to the end of the magnet. Contact us if you have any questions.
Note:
These panels are patterned after the original kick panels, but were not intended to be identically shaped reproductions with holes for speakers, they are custom speaker panels.
Variances:
Some 280Z's may have additional parts that are "bolted" through the original kick panels. While you could simply drill a small hole in these panels to use to attach such items, relocation to another nearby mounting screw may be an easier solution. Just take a look at your kick panels first to know if you will need any minor adjustments.
Manual Transmission Note:
Components on the driver's side, such as the clutch pedal and ECU, limit the amount of clearance available for these panels This limits the magnet size of speakers that can be used with these panels. In addition, if your car was converted to manual transmission from automatic, and the clutch pedal sourced was not the original pedal for your year car, it is possible to run into interference with the pedal.
