Description:
Some have tried to make their own push-to-start button kit, often with results that still require the use of a key to turn on the ignition, "hacking" of the wiring, drilling holes, or making custom brackets. Unfortunately sometimes this also resulted in fires from faulty wiring, the car not starting (or not shutting off), or other electrical issues. This professionally made complete kit is the only kit designed for early Datsun Z's. It uses the late model Nissan Maxima Start/Stop button, retains all button functions (Lock, Acc, On and button center lighting), and plugs directly into the original Datsun ignition switch connector. It uses external relays which are easily reached (and replaceable if needed). It includes a start circuit box that is simple to install, and only requires one connection from the push-button switch, one connection from the relay pack, and only 3 other wire connections for full operation. There are also 3 additional wire connections for great options such as switch light-up on vehicle entry or parking light activation, as well as the ignition disabling feature of most aftermarket alarm systems.
In addition, this kit includes an upgraded circuit box that works with two (included) remote controls, that turn the system on or off (just like a car alarm or entry remote). Not all kits have this great option included!
There are multiple security considerations with this kit. If you already have an Aftermarket security system, most all of them have a "starter kill wire" (generally called "Ground Output when Armed"), which is typically Orange in color (check your alarm's manual). When the aftermarket alarm is "Armed", the Orange wire will have a Negative Ground output, which when connected to the Orange "Disengage" wire of this kit's start box, will stop all functions of the push-to-start switch and circuitry. In addition, the kit includes a simple, plug-in security micro-switch. It plugs directly into the start box, has 3 feet of wire, and can be easily hidden within reach (see the video below for an example of the micro-switch function). Of course the included remote control system also acts as a security guard, so that without it, the start switch will not function.
The genuine Nissan Push to Start/Stop button is installed where your original keyed ignition switch presently resides in the steering column. After turning off your security choices, you simply push the button to get accessory mode, and press again (while depressing the brake pedal) to start the car. Pressing the button again will turn off the engine. See the video below for an example of these functions.
While professional installation is recommended with this kit, it comes with complete instructions, templates, and support for do-it-yourselfers. Other than a simple Dremel tool or other filing/sanding apparatus, only simple tools are required, along with a basic understanding of safe wiring, and being able to locate things like the proper coil terminal, the brake pedal switch, and so forth. The hole for the original switch in the plastic steering column cover is slightly smaller, and you will need to widen it slightly (about 1/16"), and add 2 small slots to hold the new switch in the correct position. Most DIY installs have taken a simple afternoon.
For those who regularly park on steep hills, please note that the original "steering lock" (i.e. when the original key was removed, the steering wheel would lock in place and no longer turn) will no longer function with this kit. Steering locks are simply an (ineffective) anti-theft device, that are not required for safe hill parking. Simply assure that you follow standard safety practices and position the front wheel properly in relation to the curb when parking on hills.
Option:
While we are not able to substitute for the button included with this kit, if you wish to instead use the red GTR button on your Z, it can be purchased separately and used with this kit. See Related Items below.
