Description:
This replacement sensor sends a temperature reading to the Fuel Computer for fuel adjustments. It is the smaller of the two 2-wire type sensors located in the front of the thermostat housing. Common symptoms of a bad Water Temperature Sensor include low/poor/rough idle, significant hesitation on acceleration, and either running too lean (not enough fuel) or too rich (too much fuel). Note that a corroded or damaged wire plug can cause the same symptoms due to poor connection to the sensor (see 11-3059 in Related Items for our upgraded replacement plug).

Sensor Type Note:
There are 2 different types of temperature sensors used on 280ZX models, depending on the year and cylinder head. Early model engines used a single piece "wet" type sensor which is installs in the thermostat housing (noted above), is designed to measure fluid temperatures directly, and must be submerged in coolant to obtain accurate readings. Later model engines use a "dry" sensor and measures air temperature changes where it fits into the passenger side of the cylinder head, with the sensor "probe" being made of 2 pieces (the outer "shell" can rotate independent of the sensor itself). Each 280ZX engine will only use one of the two sensor types, which cannot be interchanged directly due to the difference in the way they function (the CHTS will not function correctly if mounted in coolant, and the Water Temperature Sensor will not read correctly if mounted in the cylinder head).
