Factory Camshaft Performance Regrind, 81-83 280ZX Turbo
You can choose a Z-Car from your garage, or from the selections above, to filter the store or check part fitment.
Performance Camshaft Grinds:
All performance camshafts are created in the machine shop where they are ground to chosen specifications. The unground camshafts (called "Billets") that we have sold for many decades are not currently available. Fortunately, the factory Nissan camshaft your Z came with is already of the highest quality! Performance camshaft grinds can be made perfectly from your original factory camshaft. All that is necessary is to set up your order with us, and send us your factory camshaft (Note: don't send it in until we tell you!). We have them professionally ground, and what you get back is not only a performance camshaft "grind", but one made from an actual factory original Nissan camshaft, so of the utmost quality to start with. Many of our customers are already enjoying the increased power and performance of our professional regrind of their Factory Nissan camshaft, and all have been very happy with the results.
Rocker Arms:
Unfortunately, properly made new Rocker Arms are temporarily unavailable. Beware of aftermarket Rocker Arms offered for L6 engines that are made as all one piece. They are not hardened properly, and can destroy your camshaft in record time. We hope to have great news about properly made rocker arms soon. Until then, the best option is to have a professional machinist "resurface" your current rocker arms, insuring the contact pad is smooth, with all wear patterns removed. Depending on how much machining is necessary, this might change what lash pads you'll need for a proper wipe pattern. Just give us a call with any questions, and thank you for your patience.
Lash Pads:
Since the "base circle" of your camshaft will be changed, the contact position with the rocker arm pad will also change. A lash pad kit (see Related Items) is REQUIRED for proper function of your new camshaft. A proper valve job should always be done before the installation of a performance camshaft. If the machinist kept the valve stem heights consistent, then hopefully one size of lash pads will work for you. Each Rocker Arm will need to be checked for the proper wipe pattern on the contact pad. If you end up needing more than one size, you can order Individual Lash Pads (see Related Items) in the sizes you need. Improper rocker arm contact position, as determined by the Wipe Pattern, WILL destroy your camshaft! Just give us a call with any questions.
Performance Springs:
With higher lifts and longer durations than the factory cam grind, the Factory valve springs are insufficient, and "floating" may occur, which can seriously damage your engine. Our Performance Spring Kit (10-2011) is required (See Related Items). If you have any questions about your valve springs, just give us a call.

Description:
The camshaft can be likened to the "brain" of an engine's mechanical components. It controls the timing of a number of critical operations. Modifying camshafts for performance has been part of the automotive scene since the beginning, and choosing a performance cam grind can make or break the vehicle's performance and drive-ability. The time-tested performance cam grinds we offer have cam profiles designed specifically for a factory turbo Z's requirements. Read all of the data on this page for more details, specifications, as well as critical information related to installation and more. Various gaskets and parts will be required for the engine itself, such as a valve cover gasket, and others. Give us a call or see your qualified technician for more details, and see Related Items on this page.
Note:
If you are planning to install this kit yourself, we highly recommend purchasing "How To Modify Your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine" book in Related Items. This book covers several important steps of the installation process.
Camshaft Grind Comparison:
If you aren't certain which cam grind to choose, discuss the characteristics below with your mechanic, race engineer, or with us. Just give our sales technicians a call at (714)639-2620 for help deciding on the best cam grind for your Turbo Z. These grinds are designed for the stock Fuel Injection system.
Stage 1
Valve Job:
As referred to in the different sections above, a proper professional valve job should always be done along with changing to a performance camshaft grind. Now, due to proper new rocker arms being temporarily unavailable, in addition to the machinist keeping the valve stem heights consistent, they also need to add resurfacing the rocker arm contact pad to your valve job. Camshafts and rocker arms over time will develop wear patterns in each other. Your camshaft being reground takes care of any issue with the surface of the camshaft lobes, but if you leave the wear pattern in the rocker arm contact pad, it will quickly wear that same pattern into your freshly reground camshaft! Be sure to choose a reputable machine shop who has experience with L6 engines. Getting a local referral from a Z Club or forum is always a good option. Let us know if you have any questions.
Important:
Your cam must be in good, serviceable condition. If your cam is not serviceable, we will contact you prior to returning it to you. Severe damage or wear, such as pitting, severe lobe wear or cracked/broken cam bodies, are some examples of camshafts that cannot be serviced. Please contact us with any questions.
Legality:
Performance camshaft grinds are intended for race track and other non-highway use. They may be illegal for use in some states and areas. Please check the laws in your region before ordering.
Model Guide:
Datsun 280ZX
Model Restrictions:
You must properly identify below whether you have an 81-82 P90 cylinder head that came originally with solid lifters, or an 83 P90A cylinder head that came originally with hydraulic lifters. These camshafts are NOT interchangeable, nor can you simply change from hydraulic lifters to solid lifters. There is a way to convert a hydraulic lifter cylinder head to solid lifters, but it requires significant changes, AND will require a different camshaft grind. If your 1983 P90A cylinder head has already been converted to solid lifters, then let us know in your order notes, and choose the "P90A Converted To Solid Lifters" option below. Finally, Nissan was not 100% consistent on this, so it is also not impossible that you have a late P90 cylinder head that has hydraulic lifters from the factory. While very rare, if that is the case, or if you are uncertain of anything else, get in touch with us and we'll make sure you get the right setup.

Important Note!
Do not send your camshaft in yet! We will create your order, and then give you the proper identification information to send along with your camshafts, along with how and where to ship them. Sending your camshaft without this information will significantly delay your order. If you have any questions, just contact us.
