Description:
The master cylinder sends brake fluid to both the front and rear brakes. Some signs of a bad master cylinder are easy to spot, such as leaks around the cylinder or reservoirs. Other signs, such as a very soft brake pedal or a pedal that sinks to or stays down on the floor, can indicate problems from just about all of the brake hydraulic system. Some signs are more difficult to notice, such as a spongy pedal that won't go away after proper bleeding or contaminated brake fluid. Regular brake fluid changes and occasional inspections of the cylinder are both good ways to spot problems with the cylinder. Genuine, original equipment (OEM) replacement.

Note:
The 72-76 model brake master cylinder is set up differently compared to earlier models. Specifically, the larger front brake reservoir is located toward the rear of the car, with the front brake tube also connecting to the rear port of the cylinder. The smaller, cylinder shaped rear brake reservoir is located toward the front, closer to the radiator (the rear brake tube connects to the forward port). The brake tube ports are also mounted further apart compared to the earlier cylinder.

Alternate Replacement:
An aftermarket replacement for this master cylinder is also available. See 24-5082-1 in Related Items below.

Supercessions:
This part number is 'superceded'. Most of our supercessions originated with Nissan. A part made for a Z31, for instance, may actually be the same as the part made for the Z32, but it was given a different number. Nissan would then later supercede the number, so that if you ordered the part number for the Z32, what you would actually get is the original part number for the Z31 (or vice-versa), as they are the same part. Other times, supercessions can exist between different parts on the same car, as is often the case with hardware of the same size. These supercessions were Nissan decisions, where replacing the 'superceded from' part with the 'superceded to' part results in identical performance. The vast majority of them are simple numbering changes, where the parts are literally identical. In some cases, the two parts are identical in fit and function, but the finish is slightly different, or the non-critical overall dimensions are slightly different (like one starter housing being '' shorter than the other on the non-attached side). They do not affect the function of the part, and in many cases, the 'superceded-to' part improves upon the 'superceded-from' part.
