Description:
This genuine, original equipment (OEM) 6-prong brown relay is primarily part of the ignition circuit and located behind the glove box on the passenger (right) side. It is located inline with the fuel pump relay (closer to the firewall) and the accessory relay (toward the rear) on the relay mount bracket. While this is normally the case, some models may have used it for other functions. Additionally, some models used different relays to control various circuits where this relay was the default. As always, it is best to physically inspect your specific car's components to confirm your individual car's needs prior to ordering. See notes below for more details.
EFI Relay Note:
Some 280ZX models used this relay for the main EFI relay instead of the usual 5-prong green fuel system relay (11-3473). It seems to most commonly be the case with factory Turbo and Auto Trans. models, but is also inconsistent. Additionally, neither the Factory Service Manuals (including Turbo supplement) nor the Nissan microfiche appear to specify this, and we have not yet located any supercession or service file data to confirm if it was a change after factory production or not. If your car has a brown, 6-pin relay behind an access cover on the passenger (right) side of the engine bay between the battery and the shock tower, then this is the relay you need for your specific application.
Ignition & Accessory Relay Note:
Like the EFI Relay noted above, some models used different relays for the ignition and accessory circuits. We have seen several cases where 5-prong relays (black or green) were used for both the ignition and accessory circuits (note this configuration is shown in the Factory Service Manuals, but color is not specified). Turbo and Auto Trans. models often times have 4-prong blue relays for these circuits instead of either the 5 or 6 prong relays. Like the EFI Relay, if your car currently has a brown, 6-pin relay installed for either of these circuits, this is the relay you need. These relays can be found behind the glove box, along with the Green Fuel Pump Relay #1. Removal of the glove box is required to replace these relays.
