Description:
The camshaft can be likened to the "brain" of an engine's mechanical components. It controls the timing of a number of critical operations. Modified camshafts for performance have been part of the automotive scene since the beginning, and choosing an aftermarket cam can make or break the vehicle's performance and drive-ability. The cams offered by Motorsport Auto are quality pieces with cam profiles designed specifically for a Z's requirements. Read on below for more details, specifications, as well as critical information related to warranty, installation, and more.

Details:
  • Grind: 17038
  • Lift(In/Ex): .560/.560

  • Characteristics: Excellent road race power, 4000-8250 RPM. Use with Triple Carburetors, Four Barrel Conversion, or Aftermarket Fuel Injection. (Note that the expected power range has been updated slightly by the manufacturer, their previously advertised range was 4000-8500 RPM, as had been published in our online store and catalogs)
  • Cam Billet: New

*Cam Oiling:
Original Z camshafts from 70-2/77 came with "solid" camshafts. Cam oiling was accomplished by the "Cam Oiler Tube" or "Spray Bar". Unfortunately Nissan discontinued these parts many years ago. Most, if not all, performance camshafts are of the drilled variety, including all of the camshafts we offer. Motorsport Auto Camshaft packages include a Cam Oiler Block Off Plate Kit, which is a requirement to use a drilled camshaft in an early Z-Car. In addition, we also include an oil additive for proper break in of your new cam, since emission standards have removed many necessary components for a proper break in. See both of these in Related Items for more details.

Note:
Stock L6 Crankshafts, rods, and pistons were not designed to go very far over 7000 RPM's. Please consult a qualified performance machinist before considering this camshaft. In addition, they might recommend stronger springs, which we have available, just contact us.

Installation & Warranty Notes:
There are several important differences about camshaft installation in Z engines compared to other engines. Most important, a fresh valve job must be done by a competent shop at the time of cam installation. During this valve job, the machinist must be certain to keep the valve stem heights consistent; otherwise there will be severe damage to the lobes of the new cam. It is the contact pattern between the cam lobes and rocker arm pads that determines the longevity of the cam itself. We include complete, detailed instructions on these procedures with our cams. Just be advised that the attention to detail in installing a new cam in a Z engine is not to be taken lightly.

For your 70-83 L-Series Camshaft warranty to be valid, you must purchase proper new rocker arms (10-2030), Schneider Performance Spring Kit (10-2011), proper lash pads (10-2041), and Break In Additive (now included; part #80-9025), in addition to your performance camshaft. Used rocker arms develop a wear pattern or angle which will exert itself right into your new cam, rendering it useless and out of warranty. Stock springs can allow a valve to float at higher rpm's, and if the valve meets the piston, one or both will be damaged. Stock lash pads are about 120 thousandths. Since the base circle is smaller on a performance cam, thicker lash pads must be used. For your convenience all required parts can be purchased in our Camshaft Kit (10-2000).

Improper installation and adjustment will also void the warranty on all camshafts. We strongly recommend not only having a qualified automotive technician do this work, we also recommend finding a technician who is experienced with Z engines, especially when setting up the 70-83 L-series engine. If you are uncertain of any of this information, or any of the valvetrain parts needed for your camshaft installation, please give us a call at (714)639-2620, and we will help you choose which camshaft is right for you, and the other parts to go with it.

Note: Performance camshafts are intended for racetrack or other Non-highway usage. They may be illegal for use in some areas. Check the laws in your area. Don't forget gasket kits and timing kits when doing a head or complete rebuild, timing chains do wear and since you have to disassemble everything to replace the timing parts, you might as well do it at this time!
