Description:
This genuine, original equipment (OEM) sensor sends a temperature reading to the ECU for fuel and timing adjustments. It is the 2-wire type sensor located in the front of the driver's (left) side cylinder head. Common symptoms of a bad CHTS or harness include low/poor/rough idle, significant hesitation on acceleration, and running rich (too much fuel). We recommend replacing this sensor (along with the sub-harness connected to it; 11-3465 in Related Items) during the longer interval timing belt change (120K, or every other belt) as a preventative measure due to its location behind the rear timing cover (the plate behind the camshaft sprockets).
Note:
While common, this sensor is often incorrectly referred to as a "Coolant Temperature Sensor", both online and in local auto parts stores. It does not measure coolant temperatures though, and should never be installed anywhere other than the original location in the front of the driver's side cylinder head (this is a "blind" or dry port on all Z31 models and some other VG30 engines). See notes below for more details.
Aftermarket Sensor Note:
We have seen 2 different types of aftermarket sensors being sold as replacements for the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor. The correct type for 300ZX engines will look almost identical to the factory Nissan sensor shown on this page, with the sensor "probe" being made of 2 pieces (the outer "shell" can rotate independent of the sensor itself). This type of sensor is known as a "dry" sensor and measures air temperature changes where it fits into the cylinder head. The second type is a "wet" sensor which is designed to measure fluid temperatures directly, and must be submerged in coolant to obtain accurate readings for the ECU. Wet type sensors use a single piece probe, and cannot not be used to directly replace the CHTS in the cylinder head mounting location.
Sub-Harness Note:
When replacing this sensor, the sub-harness that connects to it should also be replaced. If you have already inspected it and determined it is in excellent condition (no wear of any kind, fully flexible, no cracking, etc.), you will most likely still need a replacement spring clip. While they can also be reused, these clips have a tendency to fly off across the garage when they are removed. See 11-3410 in Related Items.
CHTS Conversion/Relocation Note:
Due to its original location behind the rear timing cover, replacing the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor can be a very significant job by itself. The rear timing cover blocks direct access to the sensor, which means most of the timing assembly also needs to be removed. A conversion to a wet type sensor to read coolant temperature instead has been popular for some time due to ease of access (no more tear-downs required). It is important to note that the original style CHTS is a dry sensor, and cannot be used for this relocation/conversion. If you are interested in this conversion, check back soon as we will be offering an appropriate sensor shortly.
Water Temperature Sender Note:
Battling an erratic temperature gauge? Looking for the single wire sender on the passenger side of the lower intake manifold? This sensor does not send a signal to the Water Temperature Gauge in the dashboard; see 16-7111 in Related Items instead.
